When you vacation at Vidanta during the month of September, you may notice our love for our country being reflected in details and celebrations all over the resort, from authentic regional delicacies on special at our restaurants to grand festivities erupting on the beach. After all, every month of the year, we’re proud to call Mexico our home, but in September—the month of our independence—we take the opportunity to share many of the traditions and cultural touchstones that make Mexico the amazing place it is. Come join the fiesta!
Contrary to the popular belief in the US and other foreign countries that Cinco de Mayo honors Mexico’s independence, the actual celebration is on September 16th. This date marks the anniversary of Grito de Dolores, or the Cry of Dolores, when a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla declared the pronunciamiento, or call for arms, that started the Mexican War of Independence in 1810. To this day, this fateful declaration is still commemorated with the yearly tradition of having the Mexican president reenact the cry at the National Palace.
In order to kick off this month of celebrations, we thought we’d give you a resort-by-resort guide to all the festivities happening at Vidanta in honor of Mexican Independence!
