Whale Season
Is whale watching along the Baja Peninsula on your vacation itinerary? At Vidanta East Cape, you don’t need to board a boat tour—actually, you don’t need to leave the resort at all. From your terrace or the Sky Garden pool, you can spot whales just off the coast—an absolutely extraordinary sight, almost as if the whales are putting on a performance just for you.
For five glorious months, the azure-blue waters of the Sea of Cortez are transformed into a playground for the world’s largest mammals—and Vidanta East Cape is your front-row seat to the show.
- Humpback whales, migrating south from Alaska to breed and calve, are famed for their exuberant acrobatic displays, such as slamming their tails against the water’s surface (tail slapping) and launching their entire bodies out of the water before crashing down with a colossal splash (breaching). Humpback whales are the most common type of whale sighting in East Cape, and as performers they definitely don’t disappoint.
- Blue whales, the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth, enjoy the nutrient-rich waters to feed on krill blooms. As they migrate into the Sea of Cortez, they pass through the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. Blue whales can reach up to 30 m (100 ft) long and can weigh up to 200 tons (400,000 lb)—that’s bigger than even the largest dinosaurs!
- Gray whales, known for their friendliness and approachability, typically prefer the shallow lagoons of the Pacific Ocean, like Magdalena Bay. But occasionally, they may take a detour and pass through this area—and when they do, they like to hug the coastline. Who knows—you may get lucky and see one!
