Embrace Tradition with the Unity Temazcal

17 February, 2018 Written by Digital
For many, vacation is sacred. The very act of being away from it all becomes a spiritual experience where natural introspection leads to life-changing perspective. And from meditation to communing with nature, opportunities to take sanctuary in the simplicity of the now abound while traveling. But what about those who are seeking something else in their vacation—a way to honor not just their own spiritual and emotional journey, but the journey they’ve committed to taking with another? What if you want to use your time away to bask in the splendor of that certain someone, to honor all that’s brought you together and the devotion that will keep your lives entwined? For those who believe love is sacred, too, we invite you to experience the unity temazcal ritual at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta.

For the uninitiated, the temazcal is a type of ceremonial sweat lodge that was used by the Pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures that inhabited Mesoamerica. Known for its signature domed structure, the temazcal is typically built out of volcanic rock. Aztecs used the ritual as an act of purification after battle or a form of treatment for the sick. In modern culture, the temazcal has been embraced as a cleansing ritual for the mind, body, and soul.

The temazcal is traditionally a sturdy, domed sweat lodge. This one is found just outside Brio.

Unbeknownst to many, Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta is home to a temazcal of its own, outfitted with an intricately painted concrete cupola and nestled on a terrace outside of Brio Spa. Guests can experience the cathartic release of a spiritual cleansing ceremony officiated by a seasoned shaman simply by contacting the spa or their concierge. But as of last year, you can now embark on an incredibly unique and meaningful ritual designed especially for couples wishing to celebrate their love: the unity temazcal.

This ancient tradition, brought to modern day through an inspired reimagining, asks only that you leave your preconceived notions of what romance looks and feels like at the temazcal door. Give in wholeheartedly to the ritual and the ritual will come over you as swiftly as the enshrouding steam and invigorating heat. Who better to preside over the ceremony than a shaman and his wife, who bring their unique perspective as both spiritual guides and long-time companions to the proceedings? Dressed in ancient Aztec garb, the two greet you with symbolic gifts. Together, the shaman and his wife lead you through a series of rites, each representing a different aspect of your relationship and your journey together.

The shaman’s wife prepares essential elements of the ritual.

Once these rites have concluded, it’s time to enter the temazcal and give in to the sacred power of tradition. Inside, the incredibly intimate and spiritual experience unfolds through the thick haze of steam emanating from the glowing rock pit. Through a series of prayers, intentions, and ancient songs, the shaman and his wife recognize the beauty of you and your partner as individuals, then celebrate the immense significance of choosing to merge your paths into one courageous road forward with blessings. As the heat intensifies, so does the couple’s engagement, affection, and gratitude.

In the end, the experience of a unity temazcal can feel somewhat like a wonderful dream—the specifics of what exactly transpired in that sweat lodge may be diaphanous and cloudy, but the lingering euphoria is as real as the smoldering love in your partner’s gaze.

Contact your concierge during your next Nuevo Vallarta vacation to experience the temazcal ritual for yourself.
